I live in Grass Valley, Calif., with wife Kady, two cats and f15h. I just finished a lengthy hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. To chase that dream, I quit my job at the Auburn Journal -- where I was a page designer and copy editor. Between that and my Web work, I seem to have made words my life both on and off the clock. Quite a career arc for someone who graduated college with a math degree.

I am blessed with not one but several families who love me. One of them shares my last name.

I write stories, occasional poetry, draw art, am an amateur photographer (also see my recent fireworks photo essay), hack on my website, etc.

"Etcetera" is so cliched, but my interests really are that broad -- mathematics to philosophy to all of the creative outlets mentioned above. Plus hiking, of course.

Whoever relies on the Tao in governing men

These days, I'm a political agnostic -- recovering ex-Libertarian, though I still agree with many of their ideas.

The Master does his job
and then stops.
He understands that the universe
is forever out of control,
and that trying to dominate events
goes against the current of the Tao.
Because he believes in himself,
he doesn't try to convince others.
Because he is content with himself,
he doesn't need others' approval.
Because he accepts himself,
the whole world accepts him.
